Obviously, one of the most important plumbing fixtures in a home is the toilet. Many homes today have more than one toilet. Plumbing problems requiring speedy repairs are often the result of the toilet's frequent usage and high demand.
Your qualified Chicago plumber can assist you with toilet related problems, either by providing professional plumbing services or by giving you information on making your own repairs.
How a toilet works
Helpful information includes knowing how a toilet works, and what parts are involved. Pressing down on the toilet handle pulls a chain which opens the flush valve in the tank. When the valve is released, a small drain hole is opened; two gallons of water run quickly through this hole into the toilet bowl. Once the water has drained from the tank, the flush valve falls back into position at the bottom.
Waste water is sucked down the drain through a siphon created by the large quantity of rushing water. As the water level in the tank drops, so does the filler float. The water turns on the refill valve as it recedes. The refill valve supplies the water that fills up both tank and bowl. When the tank is refilled, the float rises and turns the refill valve off when it reaches the proper height. If the refill valve fails to turn off, an overflow tube inside the tank prevents flooding.
Working together, these items keep your toilet running efficiently.
When things go wrong
The system, however, doesn't always function smoothly; toilet leaks, clogs and overflows are common plumbing problems. Your Chicago IL plumber is always happy to help you with any plumbing problem. They will come to your home and even help you over the phone if you are attending to the toilet repair work yourself.
Replacing the toilet on your own
It only takes a few basic steps for you to replace an old toilet and install a new one:
- Find the valve beside the toilet and use it to switch off the water supply.
- Remove the water line from the tank
- Attach a new line to the new tank.
- Before you move the old tank and bowl, it's a good idea to empty them.
- Remove all old nuts and bolts with a wrench, and attach new ones to the complimentary toilet parts.
